SUNY Ulster Student Rae Anderson Receives 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence

April 26, 2019 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster is proud to announce Rae Anderson of Saugerties, NY as the recipient of the 2019 State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. This award recognizes students who have demonstrated academic excellence along with significant campus, community, or career accomplishments. A ceremony took place on Wednesday, April 24 at the Albany Capital Center in Albany, NY.

Rae Anderson is a Liberal Arts: Humanities & Social Sciences major and Honors Program student with an overall GPA of 3.98. Rae is committed to campus life, serving as an association director, Phi Theta Kappa member, and Student Government representative for the LGBTQ club. A founder of the first annual “PRIDESgiving” on campus for the LGBTQ community, Rae also volunteers in the SUNY Ulster Food Pantry. A three-time President’s List recipient, Rae plans to pursue a career in Library Science.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement. Each year, SUNY campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews the accomplishments of exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office for a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. This year, 210 SUNY students from across the state were given the honor.

“Today’s award recipients emerged from their campuses this year as the top scholars, athletes, performers, and achievers, as well as a tremendous source of inspiration,” said Chancellor Johnson. “The students being recognized today made the choice to be leaders on their campuses, prioritize their studies, and serve their communities. Congratulations to this year’s awardees, and I applaud you for pursuing excellence in all that you do.”

SUNY Ulster President Dr. Alan P. Roberts was in attendance at the awards ceremony to help the Chancellor present the honor to Rae Anderson.
