Local Artist Ernest Shaw Exhibits at the SUNY Ulster Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery

 November 16 – December 14

November 2, 2018 – Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster brings the work of local resident Ernest Shaw, titled “The Form of Shadows,” to the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery from Friday, November 16 – Friday, December 14.  An opening reception will be held on November 16 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The exhibit will feature recent photography by Shaw as he illustrates his lifelong concerns with mortality, the nature of “self,” and the search for wholeness in our lives. This event is free and open to the public.

Ernest Shaw’s “The Form of Shadows” focuses primarily on photography, a "new" medium in his 50 year career with sculpture, paintings, and drawings. The photographs, which comprise two series, integrate his lifelong concerns with mortality, the nature of the "self" and shadow, and the relentless search for integration and wholeness. One of these series, "Are we flesh or wood?" explores our fundamental unity and relatedness with the natural world, of life with death. A second series, Memento Mori, addresses the condition and mortality of all things; it asks that we remember our impermanence and foster a deep interconnection with our world while we can. The photographs are also grounded in our psychological condition and our relationship to time and place. These themes resonate with Shaw's other career as psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and long-time teacher of mindfulness meditation practices. As Shaw has written, "articulate compassion is common ... silence is the dialogue of centuries.” This body of work asks, "are we one, or two ... or none?”

Suzy Jeffers, Gallery Coordinator and Professor at SUNY Ulster, says, “As a long-time fan of Ernest’s work, I am thrilled to be hosting a show by this artist whose long career has shown extraordinary breadth, depth, skill, and dedication to the experience of a creative life.”
