SUNY Ulster Offers Fall 2018 Courses with Senior Discounts in Kingston
August 28, 2018 – Stone Ridge, NY – This fall, SUNY Ulster’s Office of Continuing & Professional Education is offering a variety of classes with additional 20% off discounts for all seniors. All classes will be held at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster located at 94 Mary’s Ave., Kingston, NY.
Participants learn how to do basic calligraphy using calligraphy marker pens for uncial and italic fonts by practicing letter forms, spacing, and composition. Participants will learn the full alphabet with numerals, which can be used for addressing invitation envelopes and creating quotes, poems, and greeting cards. Classes are held on Wednesdays, 9/26-10/31, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The cost for this class is $199.
BOTANICAL BRUSH PAINTING
Participants learn Asian-based brush painting technique skills to create art with botanical subjects, including bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, chrysanthemum, and fall blooming flowers. Beginners will use ink and watercolor on a variety of rice papers. Advanced students can use silk papers. Participants study a variety of techniques, including wet into wet, dry brush, glazing, and detailing. Classes are held on Wednesdays, 9/26-10/31, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. The cost for this class is $249.
LISTENING TO CLASSICAL MUSIC
In this introductory series, participants explore the evolution of classical music. By guided listening and discussion of a varied selection of composers, the class will chart the development of vocal and instrumental genres through the centuries, moving from the medieval period through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. The class will explore music and musical forms as well as links and parallels to visual arts, technology, culture, and society. Classes are held on Thursdays, 9/27-11/1, from 10:00-11:20 a.m. The cost for this class is $95.
QI GONG FOR WELLNESS
Qi Gong literally means “energy cultivation.” In the practice of Qi Gong, participants cultivate their own innate energy, Qi, Prana, or Life Force. This simple mindful movement can help those in recovery from surgery and illnesses. Classes are held Mondays, 9/17-10/15, from 10:30-11:45 a.m. The cost for this class is $109.
Despite its simplicity of breathing in and out, the benefits of yoga can include an increased sense of wellbeing, physical and mental clarity, strength and flexibility, inner calm, balance, and a more positive attitude toward life. This class will move at a gentle pace for beginners or experienced practitioners of yoga. The first session of classes will be held Tuesdays, 9/11-10/16, from 10:00-11:15 a.m., while the second will be held 10/23-11/27, from 10:00-11:15 a.m. The cost for each is $85.
Chair yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga available. Participants will practice postures, movement, breathing exercises, and relaxation with the aid of a chair. Those of any age can practice yoga and enjoy the benefits of increased circulation, balance, flexibility, mobility, physical strength, and mental clarity with decreased stress and pain. The first session of classes will be held Fridays, 9/21-10/19, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., while the second will be held 10/26-11/30, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost for each is $59.
TAI CHI CHIH - JOY THRU MOVEMENT
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese mind and body discipline consisting of 19 meditative movements and a pose. It is a program of low-impact exercises that improve strength, flexibility, and balance. It also improves powers of concentration and coordination. The first session of classes will be held Wednesdays, 9/12-10/17, from 10:30–11:30 a.m., while the second will be held 10/24-12/5, from 10:30–11:30 a.m. The cost for each is $68.
