Section I: Knowledge of alcoholism and substance abuse (85 hours) Learning through class discussion and case study, students will be given a general review of substance abuse and alcoholism as well as training related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence. Study will include an overview of the addictions field, learning the language of addiction treatment through the study of concepts, practice and research. Class participants will develop an understanding of treatment models, both traditional and nontraditional. Students will become familiar with diagnostic instruments and study the diagnostic criteria of the DSM and ICD, and also be introduced to the use of toxicology tests and screening. Coursework will also include the study of Twelve Step and Mutual Aid groups.
