Pet Behavior and Training, First Aid, Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Animal Safety Among Offerings

September 4, 2019 – Stone Ridge, NY – The SUNY Ulster Office of Continuing and Professional Education offers a variety of animal care education courses throughout the fall.

 

Behavioral Problems in Companion Animals

This course is designed to teach anyone who works with or owns a pet about common behavior problems and why behavior problems arise. Students learn to recognize body language to keep people and pets safe, identify and help their own pet’s training or behavioral problem, choose the best pet for their family, and feel comfortable in aiding others make lasting adoptions.

Dates: 9/14/2019 – 10/26/2019

Days: Saturday

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Fee: $119

 

Pet First Aid & CPR

This course is ideal for those working in the pet industry or those who want to understand how to respond in a pet emergency. Learning what to do in the first 15-25 seconds on the scene is critical and can save a pet’s life. Students will learn how to assess vital signs, immobilize, manage shock and transport, manage breathing, administer medicine and treat wounds (under advisement of a veterinarian), and more. Lastly, students learn what to put in a pet first aid kit and discover apps to help as reminders.

Time: 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Intro to Wildlife Rehabilitation

This course provides information and insight for those who are considering becoming wildlife rehabilitators. It will cover zoonosis, rules and regulations, tests and exams, cost, time, equipment, networking, contacts, and more. There will also be information on rehabilitating specific types of wild animals.

All About Donkeys

Contrary to public perception, the donkey is a very sweet, calm, smart, playful, and affectionate animal. Come interact one-on-one with a herd of miniature and standard donkeys (and one zonkey) and experience first-hand why the donkey is perhaps the most under-appreciated and misunderstood of man’s domesticated animals.

Training the Canine Good Citizen

Learn to train a dog, become an entry level trainer/evaluator, and earn experience working with two species at one time. This course will introduce students to the concept of dog training, evaluating a dog as a candidate for this training, and teaching a dog to be a good citizen. Students will have the opportunity to train their dog, teach people, and create curriculum.

Dates: 11/2/2019 – 12/14/2019

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Fee: $89 + $5 materials fee

 

Pet Safety for the Professional

Repairmen, pet care professionals, home care aids, EMTs, firemen, and policemen can learn the tools and techniques to protect themselves and pets from injury in this course. Each day about 1,000 people require emergency care treatment for pet bites and more than 50% happen in the home or a familiar place. Knowing the correct way to approach a pet in their territory is critical.
