Public Speaking Competition for $6,000 in Scholarships

June 4, 2018 – Stone Ridge, NY - On Thursday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. Kingston High School students will compete in the ninth annual Anita Williams Peck Public Speaking Competition for $6,000 in scholarship awards for the best public speaking presentations.
The event will feature qualifying seniors presenting five-minute speeches on current event topics of their choice before a panel of noted judges. The event will be in the College Lounge, Vanderlyn Hall, on the Stone Ridge campus.
Two scholarship awards will be presented: $3,500 for the winning stentorian and $2,500 for the top lecturer. Judging the competition will be John Moriarty, a retired public speaking and broadcast journalism teacher at Kingston High School; Jennifer Patterson, SUNY Ulster adjunct faculty, Communications, and Ward Todd, president of the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Established through a partnership between the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. and Kingston High School with a charitable gift from Anita Williams Peck who continues to support the program annually, the competition is designed to encourage students to refine their oral communication skills.
Ms. Peck is past secretary and current chair of the board of directors of the Ulster Community College Foundation. A long time proprietor of Williams Lake, she also is an alumna of Kingston High School and served for many years on the Rondout Valley Board of Education.
