SUNY Ulster Holds 54th Commencement on May 19th

May 10, 2018 - Stone Ridge, NY – SUNY Ulster's sixth President, Dr. Alan P. Roberts, will preside over the College’s 54th Commencement on Saturday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. on the SUNY Ulster Soccer Field on the Stone Ridge campus. Over 250 students will receive degrees, certificates, and/or diplomas.

Graduates marching in academic regalia will receive four tickets each for guests to attend the commencement. The Soccer Field will open for guest seating at 9:00 a.m. and the ceremony starts at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony is rain or shine.

The event will be video streamed live for guests without tickets and can be viewed from any remote location as the ceremony occurs at sunyulster.edu/graduation

The graduating class is made up of 267 students. President Roberts will present 261 associate degrees and 34 certificates. The youngest graduate is 18, and the oldest is 64. There are 109 adult students, which are those aged 24 and older. Of the class, 24 are graduating with highest honors, 62 are graduating with honors, 9 students are graduating with the Honors Studies program distinction, and 40 are members of the national honors fraternity Phi Theta Kappa.

This year’s graduating class includes Danielle Zeller and Jessica Zeller, twin sisters who are graduating together with certificates in Animal Science Office Assistant and degrees in Vet Tech. A mother and daughter will graduate together at commencement as well; Lindsay Anne Harder graduates with honors this semester, and her mother, Tina Marie Harder, graduated in January 2018 and will be walking at commencement with her daughter. Student Demetrio Rende, who was working on his 2nd degree with SUNY Ulster, passed away during the past school year. His second degree will be awarded posthumously.

Bill Ritter, WABC-TV Eyewitness News Anchor and Journalist, will give the keynote address. He began working in the journalism field as a reporter in 1972 and has stayed in the industry since, reporting on a variety of local and national stories. Ritter, known for his white-collar crime investigations, has received eight Emmy Awards. He attended San Diego State University from 1968-1972, but did not complete his degree at the time. Forty years later he went back to college, graduating from The New School in May, 2016.

Other speakers include Faculty Marshal Kevin R. Stoner, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty; Alan Lomita, Chair of the SUNY Ulster Board of Trustees; Ulster County Executive Michael Hein; Kenneth J. Ronk, Jr., Ulster County Legislature Chair; Anita Williams Peck, Ulster Community College Foundation Chair, and James F. Truitt, Professor of Criminal Justice and Chair of the Academic Senate. 2018 graduates Andrew D. Cymbal and Erica Prindle are serving as Student Marshals, with Ms. Prindle bringing greetings from the class of 2018. Teresa Howard, Retention and Academic Progress Specialist, will serve as Grand Marshal.  

Pastor Ted VanDyke, of His Word Revealed Church, will deliver the invocation and benediction.  Music will be performed by the College Choral Ensemble directed by Janet Gehres and accompanied by Edward Leavitt, and the SUNY Ulster Brass Quintet directed by Victor Izzo.

The security policy does not permit large bags and backpacks. Large purses and diaper bags will be checked. Guests will be asked to leave their strollers in a designated area on the soccer field.
