Critically Acclaimed Author Okey Ndibe Reads at SUNY Ulster on November 9

As Part of the Herbert H. and Sofia P. Reuner Library Series

On November 9th, critically acclaimed author Okey Ndibe will be visiting SUNY Ulster as part of the Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series. The event will run from 10:15-11:30 a.m. in the College Lounge. This event is free and open to the public.

The presentation will be moderated by SUNY Ulster professor Richard Cattabiani. There will be a brief interview, followed by a reading by the author, and then a Q&A session with the audience. Two of Ndibe’s books will be available for signing and purchase at the event.

Cattabiani says, “Okey Ndibe’s writing is brawny, riveting, and celebrates the gifts of a master storyteller. He raises questions that must be answered, issues that must be addressed, and calls that must be heeded. Nigeria’s rich literary tradition has yet another formidable Son; the torch has been passed from Chinua Achebe to Okey Ndibe.”

Okey Ndibe is the author of the novels Never Look an American in the Eye: A Memoir of Flying Turtles, Colonial Ghosts, and The Making of a Nigerian American, Foreign Gods, Inc., and Arrows of Rain, and co-editor (with Zimbabwean writer Chenjerai Hove) of Writers Writing on Conflicts and Wars in Africa. Janet Maslin of The New York Times as well as Philadelphia Inquirer, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Mosaic magazine named Foreign Gods, Inc. one of the 10 best books of 2014. The novel was also included in National Public Radio’s list of best books of 2014.

The SUNY Ulster Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series is a special program that began in 1998, sponsored by The Ulster Community College Foundation, which brings renowned writers to campus every fall. This is a truly unique opportunity for SUNY Ulster students and community members to hear award winning authors read from their work.
