SUNY Ulster Professor Kristin Flynn Artwork Chosen for Cover for Poetry Book

Bread from a Stranger’s Oven

Kristin Flynn, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Fashion Design Program at SUNY Ulster, has her artwork featured on the cover of the new poetry book, Bread from a Stranger’s Oven by Janlori Goldman. Flynn’s featured gouache on paper painting is called ‘Fledgling’ and shows two birds on a white background. The book, which won the 2017 White Pine Press Poetry Prize, can be ordered on Amazon.

Flynn says, “I often use birds as a means to express situations or emotions, and these two, for me, express the deep human longing for love and relationship.” Janlori Goldman saw the painting when looking for a cover for her new book and felt that the painting visually expressed the poem and book title ‘expressed her poetry and the book title.’

Kristin Flynn is inspired by natural imagery and the decorative arts of the 19th century. She often uses birds, flowers, snakes, and weeds to create narratives. The influence of her apparel and textile design in her artwork can be seen in swirling patterns and repetition of forms in her work. She has a degree in textiles from Rochester Institute of Technology and in apparel design from Parsons School of Design. She studied painting at Marylhurst University.
