SUNY Ulster’s Office of Continuing & Professional Education Offers Art Classes this Fall

Classes Include Drawing, Art History, Acrylics, Watercolor, Leather Tooling, and Tattoo Illustration

Artists and art enthusiasts can now register for a range of noncredit art classes offered at SUNY Ulster. The individual courses cover numerous topics, from the basics of drawing to the history of art. These classes have benefited a number of developing artists, including Megan Stack, now a full-time tattoo artist at Ink Inc., who says, “Because of the luck of having come across SUNY Ulster's Tattoo Illustration course in a Facebook post, I have finally come to a point of financial stability and a lifetime career that reminds me every day that there is no room for any self-doubt in success.”

NEW! BEGINNING WITH DRAWING
Get lots of great ideas and experiences about drawing fundamentals by working from observation, quick sketching and some more developed tonal process drawing. We will study gesture, composition, value structure with light and shadow, and negative space with charcoal and charcoal pencil.

NEW! ACRYLIC IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPES
We will use photos and inspiration from Impressionism (Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro) with an easy step-by-step approach to acrylic landscape painting. Assignments are designed for the beginner and/or more advanced levels. Class begins with an art history lesson and discussion and examples, then we paint! Bring food for lunch break.

WATERCOLOR, PEN & INK
This class will generate awareness and excitement through the creative art techniques of ink and wa-tercolor by using ink washes, splattering, cross hatching and masking. You will learn design, composition and color with still life projects or personal photographs. Each class includes a technique demonstration and individualized guidance.

INTRO TO LEATHER TOOLING
Learn the basics of hand-tooling leather by drawing a design, transferring the design onto the leather, and then carving the design into the leather. Jay Teske of Jay Teske Leather Co. will teach students at his shop how to correctly use their new tools. He will provide an overview of shading techniques and guide participants in applying pressure to create the desired effect. In addition to the leather cuff that they create in class, participants will go home with a basic leather tooling kit.
Materials/Kit fee: $80, payable in class.

TATTOO ILLUSTRATION
Interested in the illustrative world of tattoo design, thinking of becoming a tattoo artist, or wanting to improve your present skills? If so, this course is for you. Explore the many different genres and styles as well as the perfect layout and placement. Enhance your drawing, design, and conceptual ideals. Working with clients and building a strong portfolio will also be covered. Prerequisite: A minimum comfort level with drawing.
