SUNY Ulster Now Offers Pet Education Program with Training

Offered Through SUNY Ulster’s Continuing & Professional Education Office

Registration is now open for a series of Pet Educational Training courses, offered through SUNY Ulster’s Continuing & Professional Education Office. These non-credit courses include an exploration of several aspects of the pet industry, including pet first aid, grooming basics, and starting a pet business. Courses run throughout the fall semester.

PET EDUCATION PROGRAM
This course will help students explore the field of animal-related careers through online edu¬cation and internships, which are a good source for networking and employment. It offers a variety of resources to begin or enhance one’s career working with animals; it will also will further one’s animal knowledge. Certificate of completion will be awarded. 7.2 CEUs. Required: Completion of a Pet First Aid/CPR course and at least 54 hours of internships arranged by instructor.

PET FIRST AID & CPR
This course is designed for those wishing to work in the pet industry or pet lovers/owners who wish to acquire knowledge on how to respond in an emergency situation. Students will learn what can be done in the first 15–25 seconds on the scene of a pet in crisis. Learning to respond quickly and properly is critical and can save a pet’s life. Certificate of completion will be awarded. 0.6 CEUs. Required text: Dog First Aid (ISBN-13: 978-1584804017) or Cat First Aid (ISBN-13: 978- 1584804024) with their videos.

STARTING A PET BUSINESS
In order to stand out in the pet industry one needs to think outside the box and do research. This course will save time and money by giving students the tools to do it right the first time and avoid the pitfalls. Topics include business planning, acquiring permits, creating a unique business, tips to increase revenue, marketing, where to go for free assistance, and much more. Course in¬cludes a 30-minute phone consultation with the instructor.

BASICS OF GROOMING
This introductory course prepares students for a career as a pet groomer assistant, owner, or caregiver through in-class and hands-on training. 4.7 CEUs. Requirements: Completion of the Pet Education Certificate course, the Pet First Aid/CPR course and at least 20 hours of internships at approved animal care facilities (instructor will assist in securing the necessary internships) within six months after the final class date.
