Michael Asbill, SUNY Ulster Adjunct Art History and Art Instructor, is a recipient of the Stevens COIL Middle East Grant for his COIL collaboration with Jaouad Radouani, Mohammed I University, Morocco. Participants underwent a rigorous 5-week online COIL Course Orientation and then participated in a partnering phase before being chosen for an online COIL Academy that will culminate in the COIL Workshop at The American University of Technology in Byblos, Lebanon in June. The Stevens Initiative is a multilateral public-private partnership designed to increase people-to-people exchange between youth in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as a lasting tribute to the legacy of Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The SUNY COIL Center was awarded the Stevens Initiative Grant to increase academic collaboration between MENA and US institutions through COIL-enhanced courses that utilize virtual exchange platforms and project-based asynchronous course design. The goal is to enhance partnerships, facilitate scholarship, and evaluate cross-cultural dialogue and inter-dependent student projects in these credit-bearing courses.

For over a decade SUNY Ulster has provided 33 COIL collaborations involving 627 Ulster students working in partnership with students from universities around the globe. The COIL model is built around team teaching and project-centered course design across cultures and disciplines. By training and connecting professors at SUNY Ulster, with counterparts around the world, SUNY Ulster is bringing 21st-Century intercultural skills and digital competencies into our students’ classrooms at no extra charge.
