SUNY Ulster is a leader among SUNY campuses in creating dynamic overseas partnerships. We offer COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) classes in many of our programs. Participating in a COIL class provides students with experiences sought after by employers as well as transfer colleges and universities. SUNY Ulster’s COIL classes allow students to study with peers from other countries without the cost of travel using internet-based tools like Skype and Moodle to connect with students of other countries around the globe. Students from partnering colleges enroll in shared courses with faculty members from each country co-teaching and managing the coursework.
Alumna, Joan Mena, said of her COIL experience, “I registered for a COIL class in my major, graphic design. Through technology, we partnered with Universidad LaSalle in Mexico where we collaborated on projects using Skype. Then I had an opportunity to apply for a scholarship to travel to Mexico to meet our COIL partners. Qualifying wasn’t easy, but I was chosen to participate. It was an amazing opportunity to see a whole different perspective in design from another culture.”
