18th Annual Ulster Counselors Career Conference

Thursday, March 16th at the Stone Ridge Campus

Nine hundred area high school students and 150 invited guests explore possibilities for their future on Thursday, March 16th, during the 18th Annual Ulster Counselors Career Conference. The Career Conference takes place on the SUNY Ulster campus in Stone Ridge, and consists of three fifty-minute sessions which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Each student chooses two career paths, from twenty-three different options, and examines them in-depth in a classroom setting. Area professionals from various fields will give students first-hand information about their interests and the world of work. Topics span from Aviation and Transportation to Performing Arts, and Engineering to Law and Government. (Complete list of career panels follow.)

The in-depth classroom sessions are categorized using Dr. John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice, which says work environments can be divided into six broad interest areas. Those six areas are: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. Guidance counselors encourage the participating students to choose two sessions with some combination of the areas which interest them most.

The Ulster Counselors Career Conference is sponsored by the Ulster County Counselors Association, SUNY Ulster, and Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center.

The event is a model collaboration of more than 500 Ulster County community members, guidance counselors, employees, and schools. This effort should have a long-term impact on all who participate.
