Dr. Ray Raymond lectured at the Ulster Historical Society

John Jay : The Education of an Enlightened Statesman.

Dr. Ray Raymond, Associate Professor of Government and History and Director of the Katt Institute for Constitutional Studies, gave a lecture on 19 June at the Ulster Historical Society in Stone Ridge entitled “John Jay : The Education of an Enlightened Statesman.” In it, he explained that through his  early education in the classics at home and through his higher education at Kings College (now Columbia), John Jay learned the importance of rigorous scientific logic in making arguments, of breaking down complex problems into their component parts, of grounding arguments in careful scientific observation of society. John Jay's study of Greek and Roman philosophy and of the English and Scottish Enlightenment gave him the vast body of of relevant, readily transferable knowledge of political systems and political history necessary to write New York State's first Constitution.
